Romantic movie [The Longest Night in Shanghai], starring Zhao Wei and Masahiro Motoki, is in the post-production stage. This movie is filmed by director Zhang Yibai, who has previously directed moving films such as [Subway to Spring] (literally translated).

[The Longest Night in Shanghai] relates about a few relationships that evolved within one night. In the movie, Zhao Wei’s character as a taxi driver brought Japanese tourist Motoki along a night tour of Shanghai. During the tour, they developed feelings for one another. Both artistes do not know one another’s language, but they had to enact several moving and loving moments in the movie together. But it was precisely the language barrier that allowed them to show feelings from their heart.

Motoki disclosed that when he first met Zhao Wei, he felt that she was an unapproachable person. However, after spending some time together, he felt that she is a passionate and optimistic person, and he was grateful to her. “Zhao Wei is really a nice person. During filming, she took care of me, a foreigner. She even gave me her CD. We were able to complete the filming smoothly because she was easy-going and very friendly. I’m really happy to collaborate with Zhao Wei.”

Zhao Wei was also full of praise for her Japanese counterpart. “Motoki is a very humorous person, and a very good actor. I learnt many things from him. Although language was indeed a barrier, we developed some kind of understanding.”

Perhaps what Motoki once said was correct: Time is a magician, and could bring two people together.

After filming [The Longest Night in Shanghai], Zhao Wei still could not speak Japanese, and Motoki still could not speak Mandarin. But their collaboration in the film was flawless, and they expressed several moving scenes through their eye contact, showing us that the connection between two strangers in ‘one night’ could be so touching.
