Two days ago, director John Woo confirmed at a promotional activity in Beijing, that shooting for movie [Red Cliff] will commence officially next month. “We’ll definitely start in March, and our outdoor team is currently setting up the outdoor venue sites in Hebei.”
We understand from the earlier reports that the cast are mainly from Hong Kong and Taiwan, like Chow Yun Fat will act as Zhou Yu, Chiling Lin as Xiao Qiao, Tony Leung Chiu Wai as Zhuge Liang and Chang Chen as Sun Quan. To balance the casting, John Woo is now looking at mainland Chinese artistes, and have selected Zhang Fengyi and Zhao Wei. We also confirmed with Zhao Wei’s agent cum sister-in-law Chen Rong, that Zhao Wei will be taking on the role of Sun Quan’s sister ‘Sun Shangxiang’.
Zhao Wei to star as Sun Shangxiang
When John disclosed that he has signed on Zhao Wei for his latest movie [Red Cliff], media speculated that she would be taking on the role of Sun Shangxiang, sister of Sun Quan. Sun Shangxiang is a witty lady who takes to the battlefield. She has a straightforward character, similar to Zhao Wei. Hence, we called Chen Rong, Zhao Wei’s agent, for confirmation. She laughed, “Yes, we have signed the contract, and Zhao Wei is indeed enacting Sun Shangxiang.” Chen Rong revealed that the agreement was firmed up within a month, and Zhao Wei decided to take on the role as she felt that it was a meaningful character.
