As a Masters student at the Movie Academy, Zhao Wei had not really attended many lessons in 2007. She had just submitted her maiden directing project (her music video), as well as a twenty-thousand word thesis.
She would like to direct a movie with the theme of family relationships, and has discussed about this with her tutors on several occasions. If all goes well, she could start to select the script after the Chinese New Year, and complete the movie by early 2009.
Zhao Wei would be graduating from her Masters in Directing course in 2009. Currently, she is filming [Painted Skin] at Hengdian. She would head back home on 31 Jan to spend the Chinese New Year with her parents, after which she would start to concentrate on her final year project.
So how were Zhao Wei’s studies in 2007? And what are her study plans for 2008? We managed to contact Zhao Wei’s sister in law Chen Rong yesterday for an update.
Handed music video and thesis for 2007, satisfied with [Angel’s Suitcase]
Chen Rong informed us that as a second year student, Zhao Wei was busy working in 2007 on her music album, movies and advertisement engagements. In fact, Zhao Wei had not really attended many lessons.
This was because in her first year studies in 2006, Zhao Wei was in school most of the time. Now that she had completed her tutorial lessons, the second and third years were mainly for practical work.
In 2007, Zhao Wei had submitted a thesis and a music video. She was extremely satisfied with her maiden directing work, which was the music video done in New Zealand for music album [Angel’s Suitcase].
“It was the music video for her new song. Being her maiden attempt at directing, Zhao Wei felt it wasn’t easy, yet it was exhilarating. Her tutor praised her for the effort, and said that Zhao Wei had made her first step towards becoming a director.”
Chen Rong also commented that Zhao Wei had spent much time on research to write thesis of twenty thousand words, combining her practical experience with her thoughts on directing.
Graduate project for 2008 would be a movie
In 2008, Zhao Wei again need not attend lessons frequently. She only needed to report for school when the semester starts in March. After that, Zhao Wei would be preparing to direct another movie, which would be her final year project.
Chen Rong disclosed that Zhao Wei had already started to plan about the movie. She wanted to direct a movie with the theme of family ties, and had discussed this with her tutor several times via the phone. After the Chinese New Year period, she would start to pick on the script.
Zhao Wei plans to complete the filming in early 2009. In the summer of 2009, she would graduate from the Movie Academy as the Masters Graduate from the Directing faculty.
