If you simply assumed that [Painted Skin] is a horror flick, then you are bound to be disappointed. The new [Paint Skin] simply uses Pu SongLing's characters to depict the love story that Gordon Chan wants to tell.
At midnight yesterday, after the full cast made their group appearance, and after truckloads of celebrities passing through the red carpet and all the commotion with the live magic show, [Painted Skin] unveiled its veil. Thus, we saw the pitiful yet adorable thousand-year-old fox spirit, the virtuous woman transformed into a hellcat, and Wang Sheng became the good man of principle who struggled the most, and all these, were because of the word "love".
Zhou Xun, Zhao Wei and Chen Kun all admitted during interview that "this movie is the process of discovering and learning about love." Nanfang Daily had exclusively interviews with the three actors in love to unveil the love journey of the man of principles Wang Sheng, the most hellcat-like wife and the most pitiful fox spirit.
The most hellcat-like "big wife" in history———
Zhao Wei: She's very courageous and wise
Probably even Pu SongLing himself did not expect the most frightening female ghost he created to be defeated by "Madame Wang". The virtuous and helpless wife in the original story transforms into a hellcat in the new [Painted Skin]. Calling her a hellcat is in no way implying that her gestures are rude or husky, rather, it is used to describe the sort of fiery strength that she exerts when she defends her family. She's the one who opens up a makeup shop, the one who invites her ex to catch the demon, the one to question the fox spirit in court, and the one to drink down poisonous wine to protect Wang Sheng...have you ever seen such a hellcat-like "big wife" in the numerous adapted film versions of [Painted Skin]?
1st hellcat-like move: invite her ex back to catch the demon
Pei Rong has once been an ravishing beauty that no one could resist. This can be confirmed by the fact that ever since she has married to someone else, Pang Yong starring Donnie Yee has chosen to give up his career to flee the town and wander about. When Pang Yong returns to town, she comes to the hostel to invite Pang Yong to help her catch the demon.
Zhao Wei's Own Accounts: I was convinced by the director to get on board after he had merely told me about the story. He made me want to take on a challenge to portray a traditional character, a creation that is a bit subversive. This had its degree of difficulty for me. From her outside appearance, Pei Rong seems to be a very skillfully tamed and well-educated woman of reason, but it's only when faced with difficulties or challenges that her personality can be fully displayed. She is a very courageous and very wise woman.
2nd hellcat-like move: questioning the female demon in court
Pei Rong confronts Xiao Wei in front of everyone. When everyone believe that Xiao Wei could not be the murderer, Pei Rong still persist, so Xiao Wei could only agree to take off her clothes for people to examine...
Zhao Wei's Own Accounts: If a new woman suddenly appeared in a normal family, I would have normal reactions towards her, but she is a monster, so your reactions can't be very normal, this is what I felt was hard to do.
3rd hellcat-like move: witnessing the female demon removing her skin
When Pei Rong has finally decided to keep the newcomer as a concubine for Wang Sheng, she has witnessed the scene that fox spirit removing her skin...in previous versions of [Painted Skin], this scene has always been seen by Wang Sheng instead, where he faints out of terror. Nonetheless, in this version, Pei Rong is actually the one who is able to confront the fox spirit after seeing this horrifying scene.
Zhao Wei's Own Accounts: Director Chan's choice for the way in which this virtuous woman deal with it was very unconventional and very surprising. This was the reason this movie attractive me, how a virtuous wife react to such difficulties.
4th hellcat-like move: drink the poisonous wine to become "the white-haired witch"
After Pei Rong has forced Xiao Wei to agree to two conditions, she drinks the poisonous wine.
Zhao Wei's Own Accounts: This character's idea of love is that herself is not important, and that she can be sacrificed. Since I was the only one who knew about it, everyone else didn't know and didn't believe it, so she actually became the only one who felt the pressure. Thus, if the movie was not called [Painted Skin], it can be called [Love You Until I Kill You].
