The 29th Hong Kong Film Awards Nominations: Zhao Wei becomes contender for Best Actress receiving double the blessing

《第29届香港电影金像奖》提名 赵薇争影后双喜临门

Oriental Daily

10/02/2010

The 29th Hong Kong Film Awards, which is set to be held on April 18th at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Grand Theatre, hosted a press conference yesterday to announce the nominees list. Attendees include Gordon Chan, chairman of Hong Kong Film Awards Association (HKFAA), Vice Chairman Eric Tsang, as well as recipient of last year's Best Actor and Best Actress Awards Nick Cheung and Paw Hee Ching respectively, and Josie Ho.

The competition for this year's Best Actress Award is unusually fierce, with Shu Qi, Wai Yin Hung, ZHao Wei, and Sandra Ng all being veteran Best Actresses, and although Zhang Jing Chu have never won a Best Actress Award like the rest of the pack, she had also been nominated for the category in the past. Though it's a double blessing for Zhao Wei, who had been nominated as a contender for both the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress categories, because she had missed the promotions for [Mulan] and [14 Blades] due to the rumored pregnancy, and if the rumor is true, she should be 9 months pregnant come the Awards Ceremony in April, and her attendence will undoubtedly be the focus of the Awards Ceremony.
----------------
Singtao Daily

10/02/2010

For the Best Actress award, it's a competition among Wai Yin Hung's [At the End of Daybreak], Sandra Ng's [Echoes of the Rainbow], Shu Qi's [Look for a Star], Zhao Wei's [Mulan], and Zhang Jing Chu's [Night and Fog]. The five nominees have all won the Best Actress award in the past, making the competition especially fierce.

Wai Yin Hung who was nominated for her role in [At the End of Daybreak] was happy, "Winning it would be a dream come true, being nominated is getting half way there, although I'm under a lot of pressure. I'm the recipient of the Best Actress award at the 1st Hong Kong Film Award 30 years ago. It'll be perfect if I can win again. As I have less opportunities to be nominated as Best Actress nowadays, winning this award would mean more than the award itself. (Confident about winning?) Don't know, though I feel Zhao Wei to be a formidable competitor, as her performance was present throughout [Mulan], and honestly, she did it very well. As for Zhang Jing Chu and I, we played in the same genre, so if I was the jury, it would be a battle of life experience, and I do have more experience than her."

on.cc special report: Josie Ho hoped that Nicholas Tse could win. At the same time, she praised Zhao Wei's outstanding performance in [Mulan]. She also have high hopes for Sean Lau.

Zhao Wei and Donnie Yen in a romance

[14 Blades] (GUM YI WAI) will be released next week in Hong Kong. Donnie Yen Ching, Wu Chun, Kate Tsui Tsz Shan will attend while Vicki Zhao Wei will remain absent. Director Daniel Lee Yan Kong regretted that but still praised Zhao Wei's excellent acting in the film.

In the film Zhao Wei played a security company daughter who assisted in the escape of the Yen Chi Tan played guard. They even developed a romance. In the past Yen Chi Tan worked with Zhao Wei in [Painted Skin] (WA PEI) but did not have too many scenes together. With this reunion, Yen Chi Tan even joked that it was his first on screen romance. "This time I have to properly have a romance with her to make up for the [Painted Skin] regret. I am very excited to be able to date Zhao Wei. On the set she taught me a lot about communicating with looks, which made future romantic scenes even easier. After making the romantic scenes I don't want to fight anymore!"

Zhao Wei said, "In the film I had to ride horses, but Big Brother Chi Tan assisted me from the back with the action scenes. So this time I am lucky enough to be in charge of romance with Big Brother Chi Tan! This film although is an action film, but the romantic scenes are more romantic than my past romantic films!"

Director is frustrated as [14 Blades] premieres in Xi'an

《锦衣卫》西安首映 导演很无奈

Daily News

02/02/2010

[14 Blades], the martial arts blockbuster set to be in theaters on February 4th, came to the ancient city Xi'an yesterday. Director Daniel Lee uttered "(that's) ridiculous" to reports alleging that he had confessed about Zhao Wei's pregnancy.

According to producer An Xiaofen, the ordering status of copies of [14 Blades] is ideal. There has been close to 600 ordered to date, well over that of [Bodyguards and Assassins], the most popular movie in December. Such scale in the issuance of copies has boosted the confidence of the production company in having the box office number surpassing 200 million dollar mark.

[14 Blades] has also achieved great sales performance overseas. According to director Daniel Lee, [14 Blades] will be simultaneously released on a large scale in Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia as it'll be released in Mainland China. The distribution rights for Korea, Thailand, and India have also been sold. The rights for Japan has been bought by Sony, and is set to be released in May. In terms of the European market, apart from having sold the rights for Germany and UK, the distributor plans to attend the European film market of Berlin Film Festival and the Tribeca Film Festival in North America to continue their marketing efforts for European and North American markets.

When [14 Blades] was been promoted in Chengdu, the local media reported that director Daniel Lee confessed for the first time that Zhao Wei was pregnant. Director Lee responded directly that he had seen the report and felt that it was ridiculous. As for Zhao Wei, he had expressed his position at the premiere in Beijing. As Zhao Wei's friend, he would support her regardless of her decisions, although he still doesn't know whether Zhao Wei is really pregnant. The earlier report alleging that he's waiting for the birth of Zhao Wei's child is a complete fabrication. Daniel Lee emphasized that, "If anyone alleges that Daniel Lee had said it, please show the evidence." Director Lee went on and expressed that he will not make further responses to this matter in the future.

Donnie Yen anticipates future collaborations with Zhao Wei as [14 Blades] premiered in Shanghai

《锦衣卫》上海首映 甄子丹期待与赵薇再合作

Yangtse Evening Post

28/01/2010

Yesterday, the touring promotion for period martial arts movie [14 Blades] came to its second pitstop, Shanghai, where director Daniel Lee, Donnie Yen, Wu Chun, Kate Tsui and Qi Wu Yu attended the event.

Did not contact Zhao Wei, but anticipates future collaborations
[14 Blades], the second collaboration between Donnie Yen and Zhao Wei will be in theaters starting February 4th. For Yen, although the two of them had some elements of romance in [Painted Skin]. it was in [14 Blades] that Yen's killer machine character ends up falling in love with Zhao Wei. At the premiere in Beijing, Donnie Yen watched [14 Blades] for the very first time. "Usually, actors tend to be very picky when watching their own movies, but this time, I was very into it. The emotional scenes between Zhao Wei and I are definitely fuller than the ones in [Painted Skin]." When asked whether he had communicated with Zhao Wei on the subject of how the love scenes should be tackled, Yen responded that since filming in the desert was boring, the two of them often talked about life in general. For example, when seeing a number of elderly extras on set, he would reflect that considering how short life is, actors cannot be overly intoxicated in his or her own world, and should instead be in sync with society. Zhao Wei was said to agree with this attitude towards life. However, the fact that Zhao Wei was absent for all the promotional event made it impossible for Donnie Yen to escape inquiries from the media. Yen stated he didn't know if Zhao Wei have married or become pregnant, "I believe that everyone has seen some reports over the internet. It's been a while since I last saw her, nonetheless, I hope that she has found her happiness. We will be sending her our well wishes from our hearts.” Yen expressed that he had not contacted Zhao Wei, "Please don't disturb her, leave her some personal space. Although I really want to tell her that our [14 Blades] is superb, and I hope that she will also go watch the movie and see how amazing her performance was!" When asked who would he like to collaborate with in the future, he thought about it and said, "I would like to collaborate on another movie with Zhao Wei!" Yen disclosed that although there are 8 productions extending invitations to him in 2010, he will only be able to select those that he really like or those that are challenging, and he will begin to no longer place kungfu elements to be top of the list when selecting productions.

[14 Blades] Beijing premiere (excerpt)

《锦衣卫》北京首映 (节选)

Nanfang Daily

27/01/2010

At the promotional event for [14 Blades], Zhao Wei's consecutive absence is a hot topic. Zhao Wei was still not present at the news conference for the movie premiere. She is reportedly 5-6 months pregnant. In this regard, Director Daniel Lee expressed, "Although it is a regret that Zhao Wei is unable to take part in the movie promotion, each actor is an individual on his or her own. This is my first time collaborating with her, and we became good friends after shooting the movie. I admire her character. She is very sincere and frank, with great acting skills, and is always considerate of others by putting herself in other people's shoes. Under her current situation, as I friends, I completely support her in all that she had done. I completely feel that she has done the right thing." As for whether there was a breach of contract on Zhao Wei's part for missing the promotions, Donnie Yen disclosed that because actors usually sign a basic contract, the part about promotions should not have been written down in details. “This is part of the duties of an actor, the industry norm." Yen added, "Zhao Wei must have liked it to have accepted performing in this movie, it was surely not just for the money. Moreover, [14 Blades] was filmed in Yinchuan, which was very tough. Without a doubt, she have her reasons for not showing up, whether it was a pregnancy or not, I send her my well wishes."

Director Daniel Lee evaluates the cast of [14 Blades] (excerpt)

《锦衣卫》导演李仁港评价演员 (节选)

Metropolis Times

19/01/2010

Director Daniel Lee gave his own evaluation of Donnie Yen, Zhao Wei, Kate Tsui, and Wu Chun, the leading stars of [14 Blades] for their performance in the movie. The one element in common was that they were "all very dedicated".

Zhao Wei: not only beautiful, but also very "craving-satisfying"
I feel that I should use "crazing-satisfying" to describe Zhao Wei. She's not only beautiful, she is very "craving-satisfying". I find her performance to be superb. Although I have not known Zhao Wei for long, as we had just came to know each other filming this movie, I had already seen many of her works. She dives in with no holding back when delivering a performance, enabling the audience to forget that she was Zhao Wei. Before having collaborated with her, this was the reason that I went for her. I'm very satisfied with the results, her performance was "craving-satisfying".

[Mulan] to open for Asia Pacific Film Festival as its box office reaches 80 million

《花木兰》票房8000万 将为亚太影展开幕

Sina Entertainment

08/12/2009

As of today (December 8th), period movie [Mulan], the No. 1 legendary blockbuster that made records by gaining $32 million in the box office over the opening weekend, continued to shine as its box office reached the $80 million mark. Apart from the encouraging news from its box office, [Mulan] was also invited to participate in the Asia Pacific Film Festival and was selected to open the Festival.

[Mulan] achieves outstanding results abroad as its national box office reaches 80 million

The scene for this year's New Year's holiday period has notably changed from that of the previous years. In the past, one Chinese movie was screened every week with no direct competition from imported movies. The "opening days" for the 2009 holiday period was significantly different, as intense competition arose between Chinese and foreign movies for the very first time. Doomsday film [2012] was still a nightmare for other movies of the same time slots. [District 9], [Twilight], and [G-Force], three movies with box office numbers of over $100 million US in North America, calculated to release their movie just before [Mulan]. Despite the unfavorable conditions, [Mulan] still achieved a remarkable result of $80 million for its box office with its classic theme, moving plot, and wonderful performance from the actors.

[Mulan] the movie has achieved equally outstanding results in overseas markets. Specifically, the movie was screened in both Malaysia and Singapore in sync with Mainland China, and achieved outstanding results of MYR$350,000 and over SGD$500,000 respectively. The market in Hong Kong collected a box office amount of HK$790,000 after being in theaters for 5 days. Apart from the encouraging news from overseas markets, [Mulan] was also invited to participate in the Asia Pacific Film Festival, and was selected to open the festival.

In a blooming holiday-period market, [Mulan] still has potentials
The story of "Mulan" is well-known in every Chinese household. Having such a nationalist movie to open the 2009 holiday period bares special significance. Just as the character "Mulan" did on screen, the movie [Mulan] successfully also defeated its enemies off the screen, repelling special effects Hollywood blockbusters with this touching Chinese legend. Out of all the movies in the December film market, apart from the war/romance movie [Mulan], there will be more movies coming to theaters, including special effects movie [The Storm Warriors II], comedy [A Simple Noodle Story], and period action movie [Bodyguards and Assassins], demonstrating a blooming market where moviegoers have more choices. As the pioneer of holiday period movies, the distinct [Mulan] still possesses strong competitive potentials in the battle of the movies during December, and will create record-breaking box office records with the other movies.
Renowned Hongkongese Film Executive Producer: Zhao Wei wants to become a director

香港电影名监制：赵薇要当导演

Zaobao.com

04/12/2009

Report by: Chen Yunhong

Zhao Wei's pregnant? Renowned Hongkongese film executive producer denied rumor while been interviewed in Singapore: She wants to be a director, how could she have a big belly!

Lately, rumors about Zhao Wei being pregnant has been all over the news. Since the source of the rumor has been depicting a vivid story, it inevitably adds a touch of mystery to the rumor itself.

Yesterday, Abe Kwong, renowned Hongkongese film executive producer who had collaborated on hit movies [Painted Skin] and [14 Blades] with Zhao Wei quietly arrived in Singapore, and our reporter caught up to him.

This Hongkongnese executive producer, Abe Kwong, is a jack-of-all-trades. Started out as a screenwriter, he was once a director as well. With [Painted Skin], which collected a total of $HK230 million in China (over $SGD 46 million), he became the most sought-after executive producer.

When he arrived in Singapore yesterday, he frankly responded when asked about Zhao Wei's "pregnancy" by our reporter, "There's absolutely no such thing! Zhao Wei's sister-in-law and I talked over the phone two days ago, she mentioned that Zhao Wei wants to become a director, and hoped that I can help her out!"

Abe Kwong pointed out that Zhao Wei had talked to him about becoming a director back when she was shooting [14 Blades], and that she is actively looking for subject matters that can make it "big" for her. Since she is so determined to realize her director dream, how can she get a "big belly" at this time?

Nonetheless, Abe Kwong revealed that while shooting [14 Blades], Zhao Wei' was in a particularly good mood, but it was unknown whether she was finally at ease after she had overcame the hardship she faced while shooting with the [Mulan] crew, or if it had anything to do with the secret romance.

"I've never seen the so-called "Mr. Huang" from Zhao Wei's marriage rumor." Kwong laughed.

Did Zhao Wei get married? Did she invite her good friend Executive Producer Kwong?
"When we meet up together, we never ask her about her personal matters, that's her personal life. Besides, she doesn't have to explain herself to anyone, that's her privacy. (Is love of utmost importance to Zhao Wei?) Actors undoubtedly need to have an abundance of emotions, but whether she puts love first, I honestly don't know."
In Abe Kwong's eyes, Zhao Wei is an artist who possesses a bit of heroic spirit, a person of honor, unbashful and unpretentious, not afraid of being disadvantaged or looking ugly when filming, very professional.

China Vs. Disney: The Battle for Mulan

TIME

03/12/2009

By Ling Woo Liu / Hong Kong

China is moving to take back one of its own — even if it is legend. Mulan is the Middle Kingdom's gender-bending heroine, its Joan of Arc. The character from folktale is a daughter who disguises herself as a male soldier to take her father's place in the proscription army. The problem for the Chinese is that, since 1998, the definitive version of the story is Disney's.

Indeed, because of the animated Disney film, the character Mulan has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Chinese culture worldwide. Baby girls adopted from China have been named Mulan by their American parents. Disney has staged musical versions of the movie Mulan from Mexico to the Philippines. And posing for a photo with Mulan is a must for hordes of tourists at Hong Kong Disneyland.

Though it was too American for audiences in China (where it performed abysmally), Disney's Mulan was a smash hit in the rest of the world, where it reeled in $300 million. That didn't sit well with some Chinese, including Guo Shu, executive president of Starlight International Media Group, an entertainment company based in Beijing. "We commit ourselves to be a media with a sense of national responsibility," she told the state-run People's Daily. "Now that foreigners can produce a popular movie out of the story Hua Mulan, why can't we Chinese present its own to the world?"

In 2006, she announced production of a Chinese Mulan and now that version has opened to reclaim the global Mulan-mania. On Nov. 27, the $12 million, mainland-funded live-action war epic Mulan premiered in mainland China, Singapore and Malaysia. It will hit screens in Hong Kong this week, and negotiations are on the table for release dates in the U.S. and Europe.

Directed by the Hong Kong-based Jingle Ma, the new 115-minute Mulan is a sweeping melodrama that depicts the central character as an action hero, dutiful daughter and wistful romantic. The film stars Vicki Zhao Wei, who shot to fame in the late 1990s playing the wide-eyed lead role in the television series Princess Pearl. Zhao may have gotten the role because of her cultivated a tomboy image in action films such as Red Cliff and So Close, but in Mulan, she appears with full makeup and long, glossy fingernails — even as a soldier.

While the Disney film wove comedy into a Disney-esque plot about a young girl breaking out of the confines of tradition to pursue her own destiny, the new, live-action Mulan focuses on patriotism, filial piety, romance and the difficulties of war. The formula is part of an evolving mainland genre that has seen filmmakers incorporating more nuanced, entertaining storytelling into patriotic plots. "China is anxious to be part of the global community. There's a lot of concern over soft power right now," says Poshek Fu, professor of cinema studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. "Movies are a strong projection of that desire."

The new Mulan is at least the 10th film version of the Hua Mulan tale ("Hua" is the heroine's surname). Many of the previous films, such as Mulan Joins the Army, released in 1939 in Japanese-occupied Shanghai, carried political messages during turbulent periods in the country's history. In 1956, after the Communist party had banned American films and nationalized the country's film studios, a state-sponsored Hua Mulan was released, touting the party's egalitarian gender policy. After many Chinese filmmakers fled Communist-controlled China, the Shaw Brothers studio in Hong Kong gave overseas Chinese audiences a vision of a unified China in its 1963 film The Lady General Hua Mulan.

The latest Mulan was not the only post-Disney attempt to remake the folktale. In 2003, there was talk of a version starring Michelle Yeoh and Chow Yun-Fat. In 2006, the Weinstein Company announced a big-budget Mulan film that would star Zhang Ziyi. Director Ma, says his version comes at just the right time. "Eleven years ago, just because someone else made this film didn't mean that we had to come back and make our version right away," he says. "It was better to wait for things to cool down before we made our own Mulan. Back then, the Chinese market wasn't mature yet, but now it's ready."

But there's a foreign presence even in this Chinese attempt to take back its own. The Russian entertainer Vitas plays the role of a singer from a distant land held hostage by the nomadic and militant Rouran tribe, which is set on invading Chinese territory. The casting choice, Ma explained, was a simple marketing decision. Starlight International also represents Vitas in China. And, who knows, the Russian actor could be key to the new Mulan's conquest of foreign audiences. Take that Disney.

[Mulan] goes on Xinwen Lianbo as box office surpasses the 45-million mark in five days

《花木兰》上新闻联播 五日票房破4500万

Sina Entertainment

03/12/2009

[Mulan], the No. 1 blockbuster to be shown during New Year's holiday period, is currently in theaters across the nation. Tonight, "Xinwen Lianbo" (translator's note: literally meaning "News Simulcast", the 30-min long daily newscast is the most prestigious news program in China and one of the world's most watched news programs) on CCTV-1 broadcasted in its news bulletin the news of [Mulan]'s box office surpassing the 45-million mark after only being in theaters for 5 days and the rise in popularity of cinemas across the country as an entertainment destination as [Mulan] is been screened, adding more fire to the screening hype over the movie.

According to the report, "in the past few days, cinemas across the country have been especially lively, from the start of screening on November 27th to date, the box office of [Mulan] has surpassed the 45-million mark. It is understood that there will be over 40 movies of diverse genres that will be shown during the New Year's holiday period which usually last for over eighty days.”

As the No. 1 blockbuster of the New Year's holiday period, [Mulan] relied on the double insurance of its star cast and its theme to sucessfully breakthrough the encirclement, pursuit, obstruction and interception of four Hollywood blockbusters including [2012], [District 9], [Twilight], and [G-Force] as soon as it was in theaters, achieving impressive results in the box office and marking a good start for national movies. Building on the good news of gaining 32 million in box office during three days of the first weekend, [Mulan]'s box office rose steadily to obtain an achievement of 45 million in 5 days. Due to the theme of the movie being suitable for audiences of all ages, the movie has been well received and loved by audience, so much that there were large numbers of crowds watching the movie even during the daytime on weekdays. Currently, the flocks of audiences that come in an endless stream is still steadily increasing in numbers.
