Synopsis
Zeng PingYa, the eldest son of the Zeng Family catches the chill. Although Zeng WenBo and Mrs. Zeng send for all the well-known doctors, their son is still not cured. Eager to see her son get well, Mrs. Zeng considers the tradition of using marriage to rinse away the sickness.

Unfortunately, PingYa's fiancee ManNi is away on a business trip to the south with her father. So the remedy cannot meet the urgency.

The Zeng family has three sons, of which all are engaged: the eldest son PingYa, with ManNi; the second son JinYa, with Niu SuYun; the third song SunYa, with Yao MoChou. In comparison, ManNi's family is in relative straitened circumstances while the Niu and the Yao families are very influencial families.

Out of ideas, Mrs. Zeng proposes for MoChou to marry PingYa in ManNi's place, but MoChou aggressively refuses the plan since she likes SunYa, a fop in the eyes of the elders of the families.

As Mrs. Yao and MoChou are quarreling over the matter, MoChou's big sister MuLan returns from her trip to the TaiShan Mountain. Regarding her sister as her savior, MoChou want MuLan to save her. MuLan feels MoChou's pain and agrees to help her little sister to escape from the marriage. Yao MuLan is clever and considerate when it comes to dealing with all kinds of situations. Although she is a woman, she often can be more dependable and confident than men.

With MuLan's plan, MoChou escapes from the marriage to the dwelling of Kong LiFu, a young man that MuLan encountered at the TaiShan Mountain. But what MuLan didn't think of is that these actions would lead her into a lifetime regret.

Meanwhile, the Zeng family convinced the daughter of the Niu Family to marry JinYa so that the Zeng family would have two marriages at once to double the joy in the househould. However, the message of MoChou's escape messes up the whole situation for the two families. Seeing the mess that she created, MuLan makes a decision that she would regret all of her life: to marry PingYa in her sister's place! Mrs. Zeng is both surprised and happy to hear this decision. At the same time, Niu HuaiYu, the second son of the Niu family has found MoChou using his connections. He is amazed at her beauty and would not report his findings to the Zeng family.

Thus the wedding would take place as planned, but PingYa refuses to marry until ManNi returns. As family members are trying to convince him, ManNi returns. However, Mrs. Zeng has her selfish thoughts. She never likes MoChou in the first place, so she decides for MuLan to marry SunYa! It is
her selfishness that changed the original perfect couple to a unfitting couple.

On wedding day, the Zeng family hosts three ceremonies but the sight of three bridal chambers are completely different. PingYa and ManNi are tender and loving; JinYa is given a head-on blow by Niu SuYun and submits to his humiliation; but the most awkward couple has to be SunYa and MuLan.
SunYa thinks that he is marrying MoChou while MuLan believes that she is marrying PingYa. Facing the truth, both are groaning inside. The night passes as they both ignore each other.

This mistake is MuLan's lifetime pain. MoChou hates MuLan for marrying SunYa. Niu SuYun always opposes MuLan to retaliate MuLan because MuLan stole the spotlight from her at the wedding. SunYa is also cold toward her.
MuLan takes in whatever that he gives her and still manage put on a show outside. SunYa isn't as considerate as MuLan is. His depressed self finds comfort from the servant girl YinPin. The two love secretly...

The tradition of using marriage to rinse away sickness doesn't save PingYa's life. PingYa dies shortly after the marriage and Mrs. Zeng falls into a serious sickness. Yao MuLan and SunYa have already become husband and wife so life goes on regardless of whether they love each other or not!

SunYa and YinPin's love for each other is noticed by Yao MuLan. She does not make it known to everyone, for the sake of family harmony. She can only reveal her sufferings to one person, LiFu. Naturally, she considers LiFu to be her close friend. LiFu also tries to comfort her. Looking at the kind and upright LiFu, MuLan really regrets her decision back then. Now she cannot help but admit that her marriage is the biggest failure of her life.

To solve the problem between SunYa and YinPin, MuLan wants SunYa to go study in the UK. The Zeng family completely support the idea but SunYa does not want to do so. He proposes to marry YinPin and this makes Mrs. Zeng very furious. As soon as SunYa leaves, Mrs. Zeng kicks YinPin out of the house. However, SunYa does not go to the UK and returns shortly. He marries and lives with PinYin outside of the Zeng family residence. They even give birth to a child called BoWen. These events creates a big commotion at the Zeng family. Everyone in the family are ffected. MuLan is completely disappointed and decides to divorce SunYa. Just as MuLan returns to the Zeng family to get ready to divorce SunYa, what happens at the Zeng family changes everything! YinPin comes to the Zeng family residence to quarrel about the Zeng family having taken her child away from her. In their dispute, as YinPin sees that there is no hope to get her son back, she commits suicide on the spot. SunYa enters a state of delirium. Mrs. Zeng begsMuLan to stop bringing up the matter of divorce. MuLan promises to do so. At this time, how can MuLan refuse?

The Yao family displeases the Niu family due to the matter concerning buying a king's mansion. This matter affects the relationship between Niu HuaiYu and MoChou. The Niu family does not want Niu HuaiYu to pursue MoChou. This also plants the seed for the downfall of the Niu family later on.

To separate Niu HuaiYu and MoChou, Niu TongYi, the eldest son in the Niu family, goes as far as hiring someone to rape MoChou! Furious and sad, MoChou becomes a nun. The evil-doings of the Niu family enrages MuLan. Through the help of LiFu, MuLan finds the imperial envoy to impeach the Niu family. The perverse acts of the Niu family have also incurred popular indignation, and the Niu Family finally gets charged. Niu SiDao is imprisoned while Niu TongYi is executed. As for Niu HuaiYu, what happened to MoChou and his family completely changes his disposition.

With the help and care from MuLan, LiFu and SunYa, MoChou gradually regains the courage to live on. She returns to the Yao family and marries LiFu. On the wedding day, the atmosphere at the Yao family residence is very joyous, but among the crowd, MuLan is nowhere to be found. MuLan is experiencing a woman's happiest suffering--MuLan gives birth to the daughter of SunYa and herself: AhMei.

The situation at Beijing is a mess! As Zeng BoWen comes to the end of his life, Mrs. Zeng becomes sick. The whole Zeng family is kept up by MuLan alone. At this moment, Niu HuaiYu returns from Japan and swears to restore the Niu family's glory days. He does not forget about MoChou. Niu HuaiYu's deeply imbedded hatred towards LiFu causes him to frame LiFu. Risking her reputation, MuLan goes to save LiFu all by herself. In the prison, MuLan also expresses the feelings that she has for LiFu which have been buried deep in her heart......

Yao SiAn returns home after much wandering around. He encounters Niu SuYun who is arrested for helping the Japanese to do evil deeds in China.
According to the rules, SuYun should be executed, but Yao SiAn and DiFei wants to give her a chance to start over again. So SuYun is released and is touched by the decision.

The War of Resistance Against Japan starts. In the war, the Japanese military's actions are astrocity of unparalleled savagery. ManNi to commit suicide in order to retain her reputation. Niu HuaiYu becomes a traitor to China that helps the Japanese. He uses MoChou as the bait to catch LiFu, but on the side, Niu SuYun helps LiFu to escape from danger. Nonetheless, MoChou is beaten to death by Niu HuaiYu. MuLan also looses her son BoWen. Facing the brutality of Japanese and the pressing of Niu HuaiYu, MuLan calmly plan the transfer of everyone, and in the end, she buries the king's mansion and Niu HuaiYu with fire! Together with millions and millions of Chinese people, MuLan throws herself into the might torrent of the War of Resistance Against Japan......
